AJ’S BURGERS AND BEEF
Address: 124 S. River Road, West Lafayette, IN 47906
I’ve had food from AJ’s quite a few times before. I’ve attended a Skip-A-Meal there, ordered out a few times late at night, as well as stopped in to eat at the restaurant itself most recently. There is an impressive amount of variety on the menu, from burgers to hot dogs to gyros. That’s not to mention that they also have a wealth of sides to complement your meal too, including two things that I tried most recently: their loaded waffle fries and funnel cake fries. I do also know of a little thing they have there called the 1260 Challenge, which entails finish a two-pound burger and a side of loaded waffle fries in 13 minutes to have the meal be free and go up on their restaurant Wall of Fame. It’s definitely something that I’ve set my sights on doing in the future.
The food overall is pretty good. The burgers weren’t the best that I’ve had in the area, but it still has some good flavor to it and was extremely hearty. I’ve heard great things about their Chicago-style hot dogs, so that’s something I’m definitely going to try next time I’m there. The loaded waffle fries I had were pretty awesome though. Overflowing with nacho cheese, chili, sour cream, and jalapenos, these fries really hit the spot. It was exactly what you would expect from hearing the name “loaded fries” and they definitely took up enough space in the stomach as well. The funnel cake fries were definitely something I haven’t had before: strips of funnel cake dough in shapes like fries and dusted on the top with powdered sugar. Quite the tasty treat, and I would almost consider that like dessert to finish off the meal. With late-night delivery, AJ’s is a great option for those who are looking for a warm bite to eat at odd hours. It’s also a great option to go for during the day as well, and their variety of menu offerings will be sure to keep you satisfied.
Here are my rankings for AJ’s:
Food: 4 / 5
The burgers are okay, but the waffle fries and funnel cake fries are excellent. I’ve heard good marks on their other main food offerings as well.
Atmosphere: 4 / 5
Although the dining area isn’t too huge, it’s nicely decorated with the painted walls and sports memorabilia hanging up. All of the tables are also promptly cleaned off when guests leave.
Service: 3.5 / 5
The waiting period for the food was a little lengthy, and it was definitely noticeable. Maybe it was just an off-night, but it’s something that did stick out.
Price: 4 / 5
The pricing for some of the food choices leans on the more expensive side, while other food options are more moderately priced. I think that for what you pay for, there are certainly some food combinations that work better than others.
Overall: 15.5 / 20 (78%)
