HOG WILD PIT BAR-B-Q

Address: 1200 S. Rock Road, Wichita, KS 67207

It was the second day of our Design/Build/Fly competition, and we were all getting really hungry for some lunch. One of our friends who was working out in Wichita made a suggestion to head over to Hog Wild since we were all still in the barbecue mood.

The place itself is kind of unassuming from the outside, located in a small strip mall right off of one of the main roads. Once you head inside, however, it actually is very nicely decorated, with a lot of wood lining the walls (similar to a smokehouse). As for the food, I opted for a Smoke Stack sandwich and fries, which had their beef brisket and hot links, cut up and served on a Kaiser bun. There was already some of their signature barbecue sauce lathered on the meats in the sandwich, but I added just a little bit more once I got to the table.

While I was waiting in line, I happened to notice a newspaper clipping that said that former President George W. Bush had actually stopped by the Hog Wild restaurant at some point. Just to think, I could have been standing in the exact spot that the President had been! Maybe I could have also been ordering the same food as him as well….

I tried a piece of both the brisket and the hot link by themselves. I was impressed with how moist and tender the brisket was, and the hot link did actually have a bit of a kick to it. It was nice because Hog Wild had a mild version and a hot version of their barbecue sauce out at their tables, and I was able to add some more onto my sandwich (and dip my fries into as well). The sauce itself vies more towards the sweeter barbecue sauce realm, and  I’m more privy to that than the tangy. I was strongly considering buying a bottle of the sauce to take home on the return trip. (In hindsight, I definitely should have done it.)

Hog Wild is a good stop for a filling meal, and definitely for a fairly good price as well. I can certainly say I wasn’t disappointed with my second round of Kansas barbecue.

Here are my rankings for Hog Wild Pit Bar-B-Q:

Food: 5 / 5
Great selection of meats to choose from, and all of them are barbecued really well. Their sauce is also an excellent addition to the meal.

Atmosphere: 4 / 5
The dining room is nicely decorated and the kitchen fills the restaurant with a great aroma of smoked meats.

Service: 5 / 5
Just an ordering right at the counter establishment, but the food comes out real quick.

Price: 4.5 / 5
Great value on the portion size for the price of the food. I left the place feeling very satisfied.

Overall: 18.5 / 20 (93%)
