I’m often on the hunt for a good doughnut. It makes for a great breakfast item, snack before lunch, snack after lunch, snack before dinner… you get the idea. My friend Andrew is also a fellow doughnut connoisseur and mentioned that Voodoo Doughnut had set up a shop in Denver.
Started in Portland, Oregon, Voodoo Doughnut is known for serving up not only classic doughnuts (like glazed, chocolate frosted, etc.) but also some doughnuts with wacky toppings, like cereal, candy, cookies, or even bacon! I hadn’t heard of the shop before visiting Denver, but we decided to head over there on the way out of the city driving up towards Mount Evans.
By the time that we arrived at the shop around 10 a.m. or so, the line was already almost out the door. We certainly weren’t the only ones thinking about grabbing some doughnuts on a Sunday morning. Luckily enough, the store has a rotating display case with all the doughnuts they have that you can look at while you’re waiting to make a decision about what you want.
Everything looked so good that I really didn’t know what to go with. We walked up to the counter and I basically just made a game-time decision for the “Old Dirty Bastard,” a chocolate glazed doughnut topped with crumbled Oreo pieces drizzled with peanut butter. Talk about an absolute sugar rush!
The doughnut was soft, the Oreos still had a little crunch (I think they softened when put on a doughnut fresh out of the fryer) and the peanut butter / chocolate flavor combo was awesome. Andrew said that he’s also had their maple bar with bacon on top, and it was as good as it sounds.
I can now see why there were people walking out the door with a full box of doughnuts from this place. With so many different options, why not get a bunch to try at once. Whether or not all those doughnuts were to share or just for one person, I don’t know. However, after trying the “Old Dirty Bastard,” I might be one of those people walking out with a full box next time.
Let’s now take a look at the Voodoo Doughnut, well, Doughnut Spotlight. Asterisks (*) below mark my recommended doughnuts.
And finally, here are my rankings for Voodoo Doughnut:
Food: 5 / 5
With the number of doughnuts available to try and how delicious the one I had turned out, I’d be hard-pressed to rank this anything other than a five.
The inside of the store has a multi-colored checkered tile floor with some crazy paint schemes and art on the walls. The display case next to the register helps to add a nice visual piece in the middle of the counter. However, with the place operating more as a “grab and go” store, this segment won’t be ranked.
Service: 4.25 / 5
The people working behind the counter taking orders seemed to work at an average pace, but not fast enough to keep from a line forming quickly. Get here earlier to try to beat the line.
Price: 5 / 5
I half-expected that doughnuts loaded with such ingredients would demand a premium price, but not so. My doughnut still ended up being only $2.00 or $2.50, quite a bargain! The shop is also cash only.
